CT University Student Sneha Gharami to Represent India at Commonwealth Powerlifting Championship

For many young athletes, representing India remains a distant dream. For Sneha Gharami, a second-year BA student at CT University, that dream has now become reality one built on years of sacrifice, unwavering determination, and the courage to overcome financial hardships.

A resident of Howrah, West Bengal, Sneha has been selected to represent India in the Junior 76 kg category at the Commonwealth Powerlifting Championship 2026, to be held in Winnipeg, Canada, from September 17 to 27.

Behind this remarkable achievement lies a story of resilience. Coming from a financially constrained background, Sneha faced numerous challenges in pursuing professional sports. Yet, she refused to let circumstances define her future. Her relentless dedication, coupled with the support of CT University’s Sports Scholarship Programme, enabled her to continue both her education and intensive training without giving up on her ambitions.

Her selection came after an exceptional performance at the National Equipped Powerlifting Championship in Hyderabad, where she broke her own national record by lifting 222.5 kg in Squats, surpassing her previous best of 212.5 kg. She also won Gold Medals in Squat and Deadlift along with a Silver Medal in Bench Press, earning her place in the Indian contingent.

Sneha’s journey has been marked by consistent excellence. She has previously won three Gold Medals at the Asian Equipped Powerlifting Championships, Overall Gold at the National Equipped Powerlifting Championship (Punjab, 2024), and Overall Gold at the Federation Cup Powerlifting Championship (Delhi, 2024). Today, her story stands as an inspiration for thousands of aspiring athletes who dare to dream despite limited resources.

Congratulating Sneha, Pro Chancellor Dr. Manbir Singh said,

“Sneha’s journey is far more than a sporting achievement—it is a story of perseverance, courage, and belief. Despite financial challenges, she never allowed her dreams to fade. At CT University, we are committed to ensuring that talented students receive the opportunities they deserve. Her selection to represent India fills the entire university with pride, and we are confident she will inspire countless young athletes across the country.”

Director of Sports Gurdeep Singh said,

“Sneha’s dedication has been exceptional from day one. Every record she has broken is the result of countless hours of discipline and hard work. We are proud to have witnessed her transformation into an international athlete and believe she will make India proud.”

Director, Department of Student Welfare (DSW), Er. Davinder Singh, added,

“Sneha’s success reflects the strength of CT University’s commitment to nurturing talent beyond classrooms. Her journey reminds every student that determination, when supported with the right opportunities, can overcome even the toughest circumstances.”

As Sneha prepares to wear the Indian jersey on the international stage, her journey has become much more than a sporting success—it is a powerful reminder that dreams know no boundaries when determination meets opportunity. Her achievement adds yet another proud chapter to CT University’s growing legacy of producing champions who inspire the nation.
