CT University Develops Smart SOS Safety Shoes with Hidden Emergency Alert Technology

School: School of Engineering and Technology

Ludhiana: In a significant advancement towards technology-driven personal safety, the Robotics & Automation Lab of CT University has developed innovative Smart SOS Safety Shoes that can trigger an emergency alert through a simple, predefined foot movement.

Designed for situations involving theft, threats or other emergencies, the technology provides an alternative SOS mechanism when accessing a mobile phone or manually activating an alert may not be possible. An integrated accelerometer detects the predefined motion and activates the SOS signal, which can then transmit an alert to a designated emergency response system.

Smart Technology, Hidden in Every Step

A key feature of the innovation is its discreet and user-friendly design. The electronic components are seamlessly integrated within the footwear, with no visible circuits, wires or bulky attachments, allowing the shoes to retain the appearance of everyday footwear while concealing their safety technology. The system also incorporates rechargeable electronics, enabling repeated use without frequent replacement of embedded components.

Dr. Harmeet Singh said, “We have integrated an accelerometer into the shoes to detect a specific predefined motion, which triggers the SOS signal in an emergency situation. The Smart SOS Shoes were developed by our Robotics & Automation Lab within one week, demonstrating the potential for rapid innovation and practical implementation. With further refinement and testing, the technology has strong potential for commercialisation in the near future.”

Innovation with a Purpose

Commenting on the innovation, Pro Chancellor Dr. Manbeet Singh said, “At CT University, we believe that meaningful innovation is technology that addresses real-world challenges. The Smart SOS Safety Shoes are a remarkable example of how our students and faculty are transforming ideas into practical solutions with a strong focus on safety and social impact.”

Vice Chancellor Dr. Nitin Tandon added, “This innovation reflects the spirit of research, experimentation and problem-solving that we strive to foster at CT University. Developing a functional safety solution within such a short timeframe demonstrates the creativity and technical potential of our Robotics & Automation Lab. We look forward to seeing this technology evolve further.”

The Smart SOS Safety Shoes were developed and tested by the Robotics team comprising Er. Pulkit Sangar, Er. Dharmpreet Singh and Mr. Gurkirat Singh, who evaluated the system through real-life scenarios and under varied conditions.

The innovation reflects CT University’s continued commitment to fostering practical research, emerging technologies and solutions that have the potential to create meaningful impact beyond the campus.
